"Non-parametric Shape Optimization for Antennas & RF Components using CST Studio Suite®"

Tuesday, 28 November 2023, 11am ET

Advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D printing have opened the door to the easy creation of complex shapes and forms with high accuracy. Now imagine that you could unlock the full potential of those geometries for the electromagnetic design of RF components and antennas, without having to do large parametric studies or describe complex surface curvatures in your simulation model.

In this webinar, we will demonstrate how the design engineer can go beyond the confines of modeling 3D primitives by utilizing non-parametric shape optimization in SIMULIA CST Studio Suite. We will demonstrate the potential by optimizing the different parts of an X-band antenna feed chain to:

  • Obtain a wide harmonic-free band with a cavity filter
  • Incorporate an unconventional septum into a waveguide for creating a polarizer
  • Profile a smooth-wall conical horn to achieve the desired far field specifications

Non-parametric shape optimization allows each of these components to be designed with superb performance, while requiring minimal set-up in the simulation tool by the user.

  • Dr. Theunis Beukman is a Senior Applications Manager at Dassault Systèmes SIMULIA in Germany. He joined the CST Studio Suite group at the beginning of 2015, where he has been responsible for the product planning of software tools related to filters and antenna arrays, as well as specific optimizers. He received his MScEng (cum laude) and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2011 and 2015 respectively. During this time he was also a visiting researcher at other institutions like Chalmers University of Technology and Heriot-Watt University. His passion for design automation and optimization ranges between applications from passive RF components and filters, to profiled horns and phased antenna arrays.
